چکیده

In Chapter I, mptallographic evidence of the existence of the surface layer is given. Using etch-pit techniques on an ironsilicon alloy, it is shown that the dislocition concentration of strained specimens decreases away from the surface. In Chapter II, a relationship is given between the surface-layer stress and fatigue failure. When surface-layer stress attains a critical value, the specimens fractured. An excellent correlation is reported between the life predicted from surface-layer stress data and fatigue life found experimentally. In Chapter III, surfacelayer stress at the root of notches is reported. The surfacelayer stress was found to increase rapidly as the stress concentration increased. In Chapter IV, the crack propagation rate for an iron-silicon alloy is reported. The crack propagation rate under plane stress conditions decreased in specimens given the SLE treatment. An exam.nation of the surfaces showed that the dislocation concentration was much lower in the SLE-treated sample than in the untreated specimens. Chapter V reports an unsuccessful attempt to detect slip-line formation and strain under sustained loads up to 500 hr. It is believed that greater measurement sensitivity is required for successful detection.

تشکیل نانوساختارهای متخلخل پروسکایتی روی منولیت فولاد ضد زنگ

For the first time, this research reports the formation of nanoporous layers of metals on the surface of metal substrates by Raney method and their conversion to corresponding porous perovskite layers. The noble metals doped perovskites are used as catalytic converter for reducing automotive pollutants. The use of perovskite as a substrate for the noble metals can reduce the need for such metal...

PLASTIC DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR AT THE WORN SURFACE OF NOVEL CAST AL-ALLOY-TICP COMPOSITE

An AI-7wt%Si-5vol%TiCp was worn against a cast iron disc in a tri-pin-on-disc machine, under dry sliding conditions at the sliding speed of 0.24 m/s and applied loads of 6, 20 and 40 N/pin. Stress-strain (`3-^9) curves were constructed by measuring the microhardness and the equivalent strain gradients in near surface regions on the cross-sectional surface prepared parallel to sliding direction....

Punch plastic deformation pipe cladding (PPDPC) as a novel tube cladding method

This study presents a new mechanical tube cladding process named punch plastic deformation pipe cladding (PPDPC) based on local deformation by pressing a punch into the inner layer of the bimetal tube. To investigate the capability of the process, stainless steel tube (as the inner layer) is bonded to a carbon steel pipe (as the outer layer) to fabricate a bimetal pipe. Shear punch tests were u...

Elasto-plastic solution for thick-walled spherical vessels with an inner FGM layer

Purely elastic, partially and fully plastic stress states in a thick-walled spherical pressure vessel with an inner functionally graded material (FG) coating subjected to internal and external pressures are developed analytically in this paper. The modulus of elasticity and the uniaxial yield limit of the FG coating layer are considered to vary nonlinearly through the thickness. Using Tresca’s ...

An investigation into finding the optimum combination for dental restorations

The aim of the study was to find the optimum combination of materials and thicknesses to provide a tough, damage resistant multi-layer system with numerical methods to restore the damaged teeth. Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) was used to assess the critical loads for the onset of damage modes such as radial cracks and plastic deformation in dental prostheses, which consist of a brittle o...
